800,000 secondary school children in England are caring for a parent or sibling. Some are carrying out more than 30 hours a week of caring responsibilities to fill in the gaps left in adult social care.
This Christmas, Red Letter Days wants to shine a light on these unsung heroes and help create some magical memories for them to enjoy. We have partnered with children’s charity Barnardo's who work to transform the lives of vulnerable children, to surprise a young carer to make their dreams come true and give them a Christmas to remember!
Ian has been a carer for his mum and younger brother since 2018 when his mum Drucilla was diagnosed with a posterior circulation stroke, with Ian’s younger brother also being diagnosed with autism. Without hesitation Ian stepped in to take on the role as their carer and the heavy responsibility of the daily functioning of the household, alongside his school commitments. Barnardo's has been providing Ian with access to support to help in this new role within his family.
Watch the video to see how we made Ian’s dreams come true with plenty of surprises delivered by one of Ian’s idols ex Manchester United footballer Patrice Evra, with an exhilarating race around Brands Hatch race track in the finest supercars and a fine dining experience from Searcy’s that was enjoyed by all the family together.
